21.1.21 Remote Education Part 2

22nd January 2021Mr Bennett

21.1.21 Remote Education Part 2

Following on from our 1st post about remote learning, here are some additional things to help and support you and your child.
· When joining meetings through Google Classroom, the camera needs to be turned on for safeguarding reasons. If the camera can’t be turned on, then the child will be asked to leave the meeting and only return once it is working. This is to protect both the pupil and the staff member.
· Pupils should dress suitably to be on screen. Sun glasses and hoods pulled up should be avoided. Pupils should leave other distractions, (mobile phones etc) till after the meeting.
· Work doesn’t have to be completed the same day it is set. Put your own plans in place. Most work can be submitted by the end of the weekend.
· We ask that no photographs or video is taken of any home/school meeting. Permission has not been granted.
· The Google Classroom stream is for communication about work and shouldn’t be clogged with general chatter between classmates.
· We ask that parents avoid communicating through Google Classroom and their child’s account. Please contact the office and we can schedule a phone conversation.
· Teachers will tell pupils when a message has been sent only to them, so they can respond knowing other will not see it.
· If work is scored/graded 100/100, then the teacher is telling you the work is done. There is no need to resubmit work from this point.
· If in doubt, pupils should ask their remote teacher questions to help their work.
· We know it is a challenge to home school, so focus on key aspects and definitely the maths and English. Children will be back in school and the more they do at home, then the easier it will be on their return.
Thanks for everything you are doing whilst at home. Your efforts are to be praised.

15.1.21 Remote education @ Mortimer

15th January 2021Mr Bennett

15.1.21 Remote education

With over 300+ pupils being educated at home, we have stepped up to the challenge to ensure that pupils keep on learning.

Our learning platform is Google Classroom and this provides access to Microsoft like products such as Google Docs (Word), Google Sheets (Excel) and Google Slides (Powerpoint).

Staff

We have dedicated teachers for our remote learners. These are teachers from the children’s year group, who are working to replicate classroom learning in the pupil’s living room, just as if they were in school.

Time

The government has asked for 4 hours of work to be available to KS2 pupils and 3 hours for KS1 pupils. Parents need to recognise that school can’t be replicated at home. Therefore, we are not asking for work to be completed in the same time frame as a normal school day. Make the day work for you and your family and know that tasks can be spread across the week.

Set work will include tasks, use of directed apps such as TT RockStars or self-reading. There are lots of resources out there if parents wish to take advantage to supplement the work directed by school, such as Joe Wicks, BBC website and BBC channels, or Oak Academy lessons to name a few. Baking cakes and going for walks are still great activities to learn from.

Maths and English task will be set daily with some foundation work such as history, geography, art etc… Keeping up with the maths and English should be a priority!

A typical day

Each day children are invited to attend the check in video call and the same again on the afternoon. Pupils at home get to see their friends in school and interact with a teacher.

We ask that every child shows that they are online by 2pm each day. This can be through attendance of the morning check in or commenting in the Google Classroom stream.

Teachers are sharing stories and reading to all children during some sessions. We are even looking to create lessons where pupils in school work with pupils at home in groups.

We have a duty of care to all pupils and parents will receive a phone call to check if everything is ok if we have not ‘seen’ your child online. We know that lots of things can get in the way of pupils being online, but ask that they access as much as possible.

Work is released each day to avoid overloading the children with lots of information and tasks all at once. Some task will have pre-recorded teaching videos to demonstrate or links to videos which will support.

Handing in work online

Pupils are becoming exports at using the Google package. They are asked to ‘hand in’ work when complete. Some may be electronic or completed on paper. Pictures of paper work can be attached to the online task by taking a photo from your device.

Teachers

Our teachers will be available 9am until 4pm each day. Some may mark work and leave comments after this time. There is no requirement for pupils or parents to look at or respond to this throughout the night. Please wait until the next school day.

Staff will not be contactable during the weekend.

Getting Help

If you have issues with log in or access to Google Classroom or apps, please let us know and we will do our best to help.

Questions can be asked on a task or written in the Classroom stream. Some children may wish to ask a work related question at the end of the morning video call.

Teachers should not be emailed with queries or questions.

On reflection

Home schooling is a challenge. However, this lockdown we have been tasked with continuing very child’s education. Do what you can and celebrate those successes rather than focusing on what didn’t get done.

These times are difficult and we continue to review how we maximise our offer whilst under the current restrictions.

Enjoy your weekend and stay safe.

13.1.21 Contacting School

13th January 2021Mr Bennett

13.1.21 Contacting School

Just to remind all parents…
  • Please refrain from emailing teachers directly. We don’t allow staff to reply and this allows them to focus on their job in hand.
  • Instead email [email protected] from which your email will be passed on.
  • Staff will reply to posts in the Google Classrooms for those working from home.
  • Responses to Google Classroom posts should not be expected after 4pm or over weekends.
  • Our phone number remains 0191 455 4504 and we are happy to speak to you.
  • I do respond to Facebook direct messages when possible, but please recognise that this isn’t the best way to contact school if you have an urgent/important request.
We understand that help is needed at this present time and we will continue to do our best for every child.
Thank you for your support.

8.1.21 And that’s a wrap!

8th January 2021Mr Bennett

8.1.21 And that’s a wrap!

Staff are still going strong but our website has just given up and crashed in case you are trying to access it. It should be back up soon!
We have worked many additional hours this week to get things right. Our critical worker places are now full in most year groups, as we ensure the safety of the children and our staff. If your place is no longer needed, please let us know as we have families waiting.
In the 1st lockdown, we would often have less than 20 pupils in school – we are now into the hundreds of pupils in school as we begin lockdown 3. Help us to keep these numbers as low as possible.
Enjoy your weekend and we will see you soon.
Stay safe

7.1.21 What a week!

7th January 2021Mr Bennett

7.1.21 What a week!

If there could ever be the longest and shortest week in history, this might be it.
Thank you to all parents and carers that have gotten onboard with us this week. Your support makes things so much easier.
Huge thanks to Mrs Cunningham for steering us through another almighty week!
We couldn’t be prouder of how our staff have worked to completely alter our provision and pick up remote learning. We know that there will be a few teething issues. but this is only day 2 of school in lockdown 3.0. We will get things ironed out.
Our online learning package is taking shape and teachers are live each day to greet children. Lessons will become more user friendly as staff and pupils get in sync. We will be checking in with pupils if we don’t see them checking in.
Our critical worker places are just being finalised with many, many more pupils in school than during the first lockdown. We are doing our bit to support front line workers whilst continuing to educate our pupils.
Please reach out to us if we can help. If we can, we will. #mortimerfamily
And to you, the new teachers picking up your second term of work at home…go easy on yourselves and your children. Do what you can and celebrate what is done rather than focusing on what isn’t. The weekend is in sight, get some fresh air and relax. You will have earned it.

6.1.21 Critical Worker Places Update

6th January 2021Mr Bennett

6.1.21 Critical Worker Places Update

It has been necessary to send a further email to those parents who have requested a critical worker place for their child.
It is important to action the points contained within the email. Your child’s place may be withdrawn without completion.
Please check junk/spam for the email.
If you are having trouble with the link, please let me know via email.
Please don’t panic, we simply need to ensure places are going to those who need them.
Children who have come into school under critical worker places are still welcome tomorrow!
Thanks
Mr Bennett

5.1.21 Moving Forward

5th January 2021Mr Bennett

5.1.21 Moving Forward

Dear all,
Firstly, thank you for so many positive messages and responses, they really help! We have been given even less time to prepare for this new lockdown.
As we know school is now closed to most pupils and learning switches online. This includes our nursery.
We will be running two routes of education during this lockdown.
Route 1 – In School
Vulnerable children and pupils of Critical workers will be offered full time places in school.
Those who applied via the form, for critical worker places, have been notified via email.
Pupils will be with their own year group staff and only their peers.
If you have missed the deadline to apply for a critical worker place, please contact Mr Bennett to discuss your situation.
Please do not bring your child to school if you have not been allocated a space.
Route 2 – Remote/online education
Most pupils will be at home. We will use Google Classroom and Tapestry to contact pupils. Staff will be dedicated to our online provision during normal school hours. Staff will be in contact and offer a range of activities to continue your child’s education. We will be in contact with pupils who are not accessing their learning to ensure they are ok and to see how we can help.
Tomorrow all pupils (Yrs1-6), will have an online register with a member of staff from their year who will explain how things will work and welcome pupils back to ‘school’.
Pupils need to be ‘attend’ each day.
We have a number of ideas planned to keep pupils engaged. We will start slowly and then add in new elements as we progress.
If you have difficulty with log in codes etc then please get in touch with us.
We recognise that learning from home presents many challenges, but we must stress that it is important for children to complete as much as possible. Staff are aiming to provide 3 hours per day of learning. Please remember that we are here to help, just get in touch.
Any issues can be sent via email to [email protected]
Please use your child’s name and class in the subject to help us direct your query as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your continuing support
