4PS at Harton Academy

11th December 2019A Stelling

On Monday 9th December, class 4PS were lucky enough to visit Harton Academy to participate in an exciting science workshop.  We were asked to help Mrs Claus sort out her baking ingredients: the elves had taken all the labels from her kitchen cupboards!  The whole class undertook a number of investigations which included using vinegar, iodine, water and, most excitingly, heat! We all wore safety goggles and had to take great care heating up Mrs Claus’ mixed up ingredients over the Bunsen burners.  We were able sort out the ingredients for Mrs Claus which means that Santa has all the cookies he needs before he sets off around the world on Christmas Eve.

Lego Junior Lego League 2019

5th December 2019A Stelling

A huge well done to our Lego team 2019, The Mortimer Master Movers.

They have worked for nearly four months on a huge project called ‘City Movers’ which concluded today in their regional final at The Word, organised by the ICT in Schools team.

The children prepared for three huge tasks today: core values, a presentation on a local study and the technical round.

Their core values round involved working as a group to create a well known monument or building.

The children prepared and presented a project about creating a new building for the Holborn Development in South Shields.

The technical round had been rehearsed for weeks in school. They programmed a robot to complete many tasks around a board set with obstacles. Gaining entry to the semi-finals, our year five team came a very respectable third.

Miss Anderson and Mrs Stelling were very proud of this young team, they competed against seven other schools, some of which were comprehensive age children. Their attitude, commitment and enthusiasm for the day was fantastic and they were excellent ambassadors for our school. Their dedication to this competition since September was commendable and as the Lego saying goes, they found that they were ‘stronger when they work together!’

Great work Mortimer Master Movers!

Thank you to ICT in Schools at The Word for hosting today and for their support throughout this competition.

Rotary Junior Technology Tournament

29th November 2019A Stelling
Six lucky Y5 children were chosen to attend the Rotary Junior Technology Tournament at RTC North. They tested materials based on compression and tension then made them stronger and turned them into structures.
They then made a water filter and tested out different designs. They tested how clean the water from their filter was using an Opalometer. They also had their photographs taken with the mayor and mayoress of Sunderland, David and Diane Snowdon. Look out for them in the Gazette and the Sunderland Echo!

Green Tree Award

29th November 2019A Stelling

We have started this year as we mean to go on. The children have been completing various activities both in and out of school to contribute towards achieving the Green Tree Award which is provided by the Woodland Trust.

Already we have earned enough points to be recognised as a school who are working towards looking after our woodlands and caring for the environment. We have proudly achieved a Bronze award and are still working hard to achieve a silver and eventually gold.

Well done children and parents who have helped their children with their home task.
