Wild Challenge Silver Award Success

29th March 2021A Stelling
Our children continue to work towards achieving the RSPB Wild Challenge Gold award. This week we have submitted further evidence to secure the Silver accolade. Year 6 have been hunting for invertebrates and other wildlife around the school grounds, the highlight being a newt and Year 4 recently completed a Minibeast Survey with a focus on micro-habitats. Year 2 spent a whole week looking at birds. The children made bird homes, bird feeders and some spent time taking part in the Big Garden Birdwatch.
These enrichment activities not only increase the children’s Science Capital but are also put forward as evidence in being recognised for the fantastic opportunities we offer at Mortimer. Gold is within reach!

The children had a great time and its not quite finished yet! The winners of the Guess the number of Chicks, Guess the number of eggs and Pin the beak on the chick will be announced on Monday! We also have our Easter raffle taking place on Thursday 1st April, there’s still time to purchase a ticket. There are going to be lots of winners! Please remember that we break up on Thursday 1st April and return Tuesday 20th April for Shakespeare week!

Just some things to keep you up to date on:

Milk, Leavers Hoodies, Y6 Thurston, £10 voucher for all, Medicine and Free Cricket…phew!

Milk

The summer term payment for milk money is due and is now on parent pay.  The last date to pay is Friday 23rd April, no more payments will be taken after that date.  If your child is in receipt of free school meals through receipt of means tested benefits milk will be ordered automatically, you do not need to do anything.

Year 6 Leavers Hoodies

There will be navy hoodies available to order for the children leaving Y6 in July. The school logo will be on the front and names will be placed in the shape of the year on the reverse.

Hoodies will cost £12.50 (Payable via Parent Pay). Children will be permitted to wear these tops for the last two weeks of the summer term before they leave instead of their normal school jumper or cardigan.

If you wish to order, please complete the Google Form (link below).

We have three sample sizes in school from the supplier of an extra-large youth, small adult and medium adult to be used as a gauge for size in school. Children will be able to assess which size they need with the support of staff in school. Orders are non-refundable once placed with the supplier.

Please complete the below form to order:

https://forms.gle/wTW5T3WGEE65t1v4A

Orders must be placed and paid for by Wednesday 21st April 2021. Any orders received but not paid for will not be completed after this date. No later orders will be accepted.

£10 voucher to all

We have been told that all families will receive a £10 Aldi voucher (except those families in receipt of free school meals who will receive a £25 voucher as before).  This is in recognition that all of our families have been in some way affected by Covid 19. More details to follow.

More information about Easter activities will soon be available on the Council website, visit www.southtyneside.gov.uk/holidayclubs.

Medicine and Tablets

Please can we ask that children do not keep medicine in their coats or pockets when in school.

Looking back: No screen day 5th March

9th March 2021Mr Bennett

On Friday 5th March, we turned our screens off and went back to basics. Mrs Mackay organised some fab activities for all of the children in school around science and the outdoors.

Year 3 tended to the Mortimer Woodland – clearing up dead foliage and watering the trees.

Year 5 turned over the Minibeast garden and applied fresh soil as well as planting 10 begonias.

Whole school including Nursery – every child planted a bulb to be cared for at home to mark the end of Lockdown 3 and looking forward to a brighter future with every child back in school.
