| Mrs Grant and Mr Mackay It is with much sadness (but happiness for them) we announce the retirement of two long standing members of the Mortimer teaching team.
At the end of term, we will say our final good byes to Mrs Grant (3JG) and Mr Mackay (5PM). By the time we close for the summer holidays, Mr Mackay will have worked at Mortimer for 27 years and nearly 7 months. Mrs Grant, has been teaching at Mortimer for 33 years and nearly 11 months! Both amazing servants to the school and the pupils that have been in their classrooms! We are sure that you join us in wishing them the very best health and happiness in their retirement plans. Therefore, we get to say congratulations to Miss Bone and Mrs Gibson as they take up teaching positions with us from September. Welcome to Mortimer! |

| Fire serviceWe had a special visitor in school on Friday. Firefighter Little from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service delivered a talk to our Key Stage 2 pupils on the topic of fire safety and associated implications of anti-social behaviour.
This was an excellent opportunity which informed our pupils of how they could keep themselves and others safe in and around the home, especially as the summer break approaches. Keeping our pupils safe, in school and in the wider community, is always our top priority. As discussed in our session today, if you are concerned about anti-social behaviour you can report it anonymously. The Fire Service can also keep you and your family safe by installing fire alarms free of charge. Please see below for details. A huge thank you to Firefighter Little and the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service’s Education and Prevention Department. To anonymously report anti-social behaviour – CrimeStoppers Freephone 0800555111 To request free smoke alarms for your home – South Shields Community Fire Station 0191 4441827 |

| Parking
We ask that parents again consider their parking choices. Local residents are complaining of cars being parked across drive ways and preventing access to properties. In the nicer weather, please park and stride to avoid unsuitable parking choices. Thank you for your understanding. |

| Police Visit – 13.6.22 |
|
Good morning,
we were delighted to welcome Northumbria Police into school today. They spoke to year 4 and year 5 pupils around the issue of bullying and how we can prevent it.
Types of hate crime were discussed at an appropriate level and the team, including local PC Steve, visited classes afterwards to answer any questions.
During the assembly, pupils were shown a thought provoking video about bullying a burger and bullying a child, with more people complaining about their burger than a child being bullied in a fast food restaurant.
Whilst a challenging topic, the children were keen to engage and answer the questions. There were even some interesting comments and questions back to the police team!
This was a great addition to the Kidsafe work that we already use to help keep all children safe.
Mr Bennett
Deputy Head Teacher

| KS2 Success! – 17.5.22 |
| Dear all,
Monday morning’s assembly focused on celebrating the many achievements of our lovely KS2 children. We started by giving out certificates to the children who had entered the national ‘If I Were an Engineer’ competition. All children who entered achieved either passes, merits or distinctions and some were even shortlisted winners with distinction: well done to our budding engineers! A special Congratulations to Harriet and Ibrahim, both from Mr Douglas’s class, who have been chosen as the North East Y3 winners and have been invited to an awards ceremony on Monday 23rd May at the Discovery Museum! Congratulations to our Reading Champions! These KS2 children were nominated by their teachers for their exceptional effort in reading recently. One of our lucky nominees had their name picked out of a hat and is taking home a £10 voucher to spend on books of their choice. A huge well done to you all! Finally, Eva – from Miss Anderson’s class – showcased her dancing medals and trophies after being awarded First Place in the NCDTA North East Juvenile Tap Championship. What a fantastic achievement! Well done everyone!

2. Jubilee Banquet
On Thursday 26th May our school chef will be cooking a Jubilee Banquet. Your child will have the choice of a Buckingham Burger (burger in a bun), Platinum pasta (tomato pasta {v}) or Corgi Sausage Roll all served with sides and a pudding. You will have to order a hot meal on parent pay (this will not reflect the meal on offer) or if your child would prefer one of the sandwich options please choose one of those. |

3. Jubilee Celebrations
School Jubilee Celebrations – Thursday, 26 May 2022 As part of our Jubilee celebrations, we will be holding a celebration day on Thursday, 26 May 2022. Each child is to bring in a plastic/plate of food to eat at a ‘street party’ on the afternoon. Each year group is learning about a decade of the Queen’s reign. We think it would be nice for the children to dress in appropriate clothing for their decade: Nursery and Reception – 2010’s Year 1 – 1960’s Year 2 – 1970’s Year 3 – 1980’s Year 4 – 1990’s Year 5 – 2000’s Year 6 – 1950’s |
