Read Write Inc Meetings – 15.9.22
Dear parents/carers,

Reception Parents

Tues 27th Sep

2:45pm

School Hall

KS1 Parents (Years 1 & 2)

Wed 28th Sep

2:45pm

School Hall

We warmly invite you to a meeting about phonics and reading teaching within our school. We have changed how we teach reading within school and now use Read Write Inc to drive our phonics and English for our younger children. The meeting will be a chance to hear about the changes and how it works. We will make materials available for parents who can’t attend.

Read Write Inc. is a popular phonics scheme. Like all phonics schemes, it teaches children the sounds in English, the letters that represent them, and how to form the letters when writing. Read Write Inc. Phonics includes reading books written using only the letters they have learnt at each level (and a small number of separately taught tricky words). The children will quickly feel confident and successful. The following video gives a quick overview of the programme:

New Key Stage 2 Houses

13th September 2022A Stelling

Last academic year our School Council wanted to discuss the renaming of our Key Stage 2 House system. After much discussion and many sensible suggestions they decided that the existing House names should be changed to names of British trees.

The new Houses are therefore:
Oak
Beech
Birch
Willow
The decision was made to reflect Modern Britain and our commitment as a school to consider and care for the environment. Our Mortimer Woodland has one of each tree planted in it which hopefully the children will see flourish year on year. All of the children have looked at a mini-study of each tree with their class teacher.
Last week we held elections for new House Captains and Vice Captains. Several Year 6 children took part and the members of each House voted for who they thought would best represent them. All of the nominees made fabulous speeches and all were worthy of a position but sadly only four positions are available in each House. We are very proud of everyone who took part and offer commiserations to those who just missed out and a huge congratulations to our new House Captains and Vice Captains. We know they will lead their Houses in the best possible way.

Head Teacher Update

7th September 2022Mr Bennett
Dear Parents/Carers,
This term marks the start of my Mortimer journey from 1992 as Miss Reay, student teacher. Then becoming a full time member of staff in 1993. For three decades, Mortimer Primary has been a huge part of my life and it continues to be an absolute honour and privilege to be part of the special and very unique Mortimer Family for so many years. I am so proud of the fact that I am Head Teacher of Mortimer Primary School.
However, this term will be my last leading the school, with my retirement confirmed for January 2023.
Mortimer will forever be a very special place. I love speaking to parents (and dare I say Grandparents) who I used to teach.
I absolutely know the Mortimer spirit will keep us going from strength to strength as we continue to represent our community in such a special way.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has been with me on this journey and
ultimately for allowing me 30 years of fantastic pupils who are second to none. I am so honoured to have played a small part in all of your lives.

The Governing Body are now tasked with looking to the future leadership of the
school.

Yours sincerely
Mrs Cunningham
Head Teacher

Teddy Bears Picnic – 20.7.22

This Wednesday sees the return of our annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic.

All children (Nursery – Yr6) will have the chance (weather dependent) to have a special break.

Children are welcome to bring a snack/crisps/drink to have during the picnic.

If you wish to support the work of Action Medical Research, you can make a donation via Parent Pay.

Oh…and don’t forget your teddy bear!

MP Visit

On Friday 15th , our year 6 pupils had a special visit from local MP Emma Lewell-Buck. She attended after receiving a letter from Henry in year 6. She was able to discuss her job and answer pupil questions during her visit with us.

It was fantastic that she could take time to support to Henry in person and meet the rest of his year group friends.

School Games Gold Level Mark Award

We are delighted to announce that we, Mortimer Primary school, have achieved the School Games Gold level Mark Award for the 2021/22 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in

2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward and recognise school’s engagement (provision and uptake) in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

Our physical activity and school sport achievements this year are too many to mention them all. A significant number of our children have participated in inter school sporting events and all of our children have taken part in competitive school events in school. A highlight was winning the South of Tyne Swimming Gala with our childfren taking home 36 medals in total.

Commonwealth Games

As you are probably aware, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games takes place on the 28th July. The values of the Games are Humanity, Destiny and Equality.

The ethos of the games very much follow our own school approach for all aspects of your children’s education. The Games describes itself as the world’s most inclusive, fair and progressive multi-sport event.

Our school’s sports events allow access for all of our children to participate in competitive sport. Our school clubs also are aimed at children who are not necessarily gifted and talented within this area of the curriculum. Our intra school Sports Days and House Competitions (KS2) in Rounders, Football, Netball and Cricket are fully inclusive and allow all our children to participate and shine.

Healthy Schools

Mortimer Primary School has just been recognised again for this award. School’s need to apply every three years. As a school we have been involved with the Healthy Schools programme since its inception. This celebrates our success with looking after everyone’s health and well-being. Joseph and Jessica (two of our school council members) travelled to the Town Hall to collect this prestigious award.

Extended Opportunities for Pupils – Autumn Term

We are busy pulling together our extra-curricular activities package for September.

Start 2 Finish athletics will continue with KS1 Wednesday and KS2 on Friday. Sign-up forms will follow this week.

As soon as start dates are confirmed for other clubs, we will send out the appropriate information.

Year 6 Leavers assembly 20.7.22

Hankies at the ready parents! You are welcome to join us for a 9am start in the school hall Wednesday 20th July.

Stunt Bikes

KS2 pupils were very impressed with the 3SIXTY Bicycle Stunt Team as they performed a short array of tricks this morning and answered pupils’ questions! Check out a video or two on our website.

Weather Warning

We continue to review all activities to ensure the safety of all and will share any future updates asap. Non-uniform continues for Tuesday.

Warnings of extreme heat – 15.7.22
Dear parents/carers,
Amber warnings of extreme heat have been given for Monday 18th July and Tuesday 19th July by the Met Office.

To aid the child in keeping as a cool as possible, we will be allowing non-uniform for both of these days.
We recommend t-shirt and shorts for pupils.
We ask that clothing choices are kept appropriate for school. Please no crop tops, football tops/strips or denim etc. Sensible footwear should still be wore, so please no flip flops or similar.
It will be very important to drink water throughout the day, therefore children should have a suitable water bottle in school to refill.
Many thanks for your support.
