World Book Day 2021

4th March 2021A Stelling

4.3.21 Happy World Book Day to you all!

Today is extra special because we are celebrating our love of books with children all over the world. We would have loved for you all to be in school with us, so instead, we are bringing World Book Day celebrations to you.

Did you hear Mrs Douglas on BBC Newcastle Radio this morning? She was talking about what World Book Day is like this year in school and at home! Have a listen here!

Have you heard the first ever World Book day song by MC Grammar?? How many stories can you spot in the song?

We have put together a collection of videos of staff from across the school sharing their favourite books. Get yourselves snuggled up, relax and choose a staff member to read you a story from the comfort of your own home. You could even listen to your teacher reading you a bedtime story.

It won’t be long until you are back in school and enjoying story time in class with your friends. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy sharing some of our favourite stories at home.

Have a great World Book Day!

Week 2: A letter from Mrs Cunningham (Wednesday)

1st April 2020A Stelling

Hello everyone, it’s Mrs Cunningham here again.

I hope you all had a good day and did not get too bored.

Today I was in school. It started with Joe Wicks half an hour PE class. I had to jump around a lot and pretend to be a crab. Then Mrs Stelling got me to join in with Oti Mabuse Strictly Dance class. I was Elsa from Frozen…..well I thought I was, but I’m not sure whether I looked like her. I was dancing with Mrs Stelling, Miss Marshall and Mrs Keighery. We had lots of fun, but I got a bit dizzy. I think my legs are going to be a bit sore tomorrow.

Have a wonderful Wednesday. Miss you all.

Mrs Cunningham

Year 3 STEM Week 2020

6th March 2020A Stelling

This week, Year 3 have been designing, making and evaluating models of Roman Chariots.  To begin with, each group researched information about the chariots, learning about the materials used, their uses and how they worked.  We then made prototypes in order to decide if we wanted to use a fixed axle or fixed wheels. During this stage, each group evaluated their design and managed to work out where potential problems may arise.  Our final challenge was to create our finished models.  In the end, we were extremely proud of our finished products and thought they would have made great additions to the Roman Empire!

Year 5 STEM Week 2020: Merry-go-rounds

6th March 2020A Stelling

Year 5 have worked in groups this week to make carousels! They designed their merry-go-rounds then made the circuit that would make it move. They used a range of equipment such as hacksaws, vices and secateurs to make the frame. Finally, they personalised their carousels with their own designs. The finished products are fantastic and all fit the brief of moving in a circular motion. Some groups experimented further with changing the speed and direction. Well done!

Green Tree Award Update

14th February 2020A Stelling

We will be accepting our delivery of trees shortly after half term and a date will be set for planting them. The children involved in this project will be donning their wellies and along with a parent/carer will aim to transform an area of the turning circle into our Mortimer Woodland! Mrs Mackay has also managed to secure another delivery of sapings in November taking our total up to 45 trees. We look forward to seeing our ‘woodland’ grow.

Big Schools’ Bird Watch

24th January 2020A Stelling

We thought we would incorporate our tree party with a spot of bird watching this week. Mrs Mackay’s maths group have taken part in the Big Schools’ BirdWatch for the RSPB and when we had finished twitching we decided to have our tree party. The children chatted about the types of trees in our local park and enjoyed eating their snacks. We also discussed the importance of ensuring our rubbish went in the bin and not into the environment. The data was brought back to school where we will log it with the RSPB and also use it do complete some statistics work on.

Global Neighbours

25th November 2019A Stelling

Some of our Junior children have established a link with a school in South Korea. The Global Neighbours club have shared information about our school in a short film and have enjoyed learning about life in a school in South Korea. We hope you enjoy them too. We will continue with this link throughout the year and will post further items in due course. Next we are looking forward to trying traditional Korean food.

Y3 Waterstones Visit

10th July 2019A Stelling

Last week, our Year 3 children visited Waterstones in Newcastle to purchase new books for our Key Stage Two library. The children participated in a book recommendation workshop before looking around the shop to select a book of their choice. The children put a great deal of thought into their selections and tried really hard to buy a fantastic range of books to appeal to children across the juniors. Every child had the experience of purchasing their chosen book over the counter before carrying them back to school to be put on our library shelves. We are all very excited to see the books being borrowed and enjoyed by our Key Stage Two children from September.
