Emmaus Big Draw Calendar Winners!

5th December 2022Mr Bennett
Mortimer Primary School
Excellence for all
Emmaus – 05/12/22
Dear parents/carers,
During the month of October, Year 6 took part in a Big Draw event in partnership with a local charity, Emmaus North East.  The charity is dedicated to helping those in need who are homeless and asked our Year 6 pupils to put their drawing skills to the test by drawing designs based upon North East landmarks.  The children’s work was then sent off and judged; winning entries are to be included in Emmaus’ 2023 calendar.  Many of the children’s designs depicted homeless individuals or highlighted the issue in other ways.  We invited Year 6 parents and guardians along to spend the afternoon drawing alongside the children and I think you will agree that we have some extremely talented parents at Mortimer!

Last week, representatives from Emmaus came to Mortimer to talk about how they help people in our local community and held a question and answer session about homelessness with our Year 6 pupils.  We were also lucky enough to be introduced to their new therapy puppy, Loki. They announced the names of the 12 winning artists whose work will be included in their 2023 calendar and were kind enough to give prizes to every child who took part.  Thank you so much, Emmaus!

The 12 winning entries belonged to:

  • Amy Adams
  • William Amor
  • Will Consadine
  • William Davies
  • Lily Eddon
  • Harry Evans
  • Ryan Jahanfar
  • Isabel Langston
  • Anna Maughan
  • Alice Turner
  • Finley Winfield
  • Eve-Casey Wynne

Well done to all of you and we cannot wait to see your entries on the 2023 calendar! As soon as they go on sale, we will let you know in case you want to purchase one and help support a fantastic local charity.

More information about Emmaus North East can be found at www.emmaus.org.uk/north-east/

WOW – Walk to School Challenge

Well done Mortimer!

The results of the Autumn WOW Walk of Fame Challenge are in!

Mortimer Primary School topped the local leader board for South Tyneside and finished 40th on the national leader board (for England)!

There were more than 900 schools taking part so congratulations to all of the pupils who took part, what a fantastic achievement!

WOW is a pupil-led initiative where children self-report how they get to school every day using the interactive WOW Travel Tracker. If they travel sustainably (walk/wheel, cycle or scoot) once a week for a month, they get rewarded with a badge. It’s that easy!

On average, WOW schools see a 30% REDUCTION IN CAR JOURNEYS taken to the school gate and a 23% INCREASE IN WALKING RATES.

Maths Week England – starts Monday 14th November

We’re celebrating Maths Week England by taking part in a friendly times tables (and division) competition. The competition runs from 07:30 GMT Monday 14th November to 19:30 GMT Wednesday 16th November. It’s all done online via play.ttrockstars.com.

Children can play in any game mode with every correct answer to a multiplication or division question, earning themselves, their class and the school a point. The Times Tables Rock Stars platform will calculate the class average (the number of correct answers per pupil in the class who play during the competition hours, subject to a daily 60-minute limit (see below)). Winning classes in the school and in the competition as a whole will be the ones with the highest average.

To support player wellbeing, there is a daily time limit of 60-minutes per player. In other words, each player can earn competition points for up to 60-minutes between 07:30 GMT and 19:30 GMT on 07:30 GMT Monday 14th November to 19:30 GMT Wednesday 16th November. Once the player goes beyond 60-minutes of play on that day, they will still earn coins but will no longer earn points towards the competition.

In the spirit of the competition, please don’t play on their behalf but by all means encourage and support them to the extent that it doesn’t cause high stress levels or impact on family plans.

Anti-Bullying Week Starts Monday 14th November

Odd Socks Day marks the start of Anti-Bullying Week. It will take place on Monday 14th November.

Odd Socks Day is designed to be fun! It’s an opportunity to encourage children to express themselves and celebrate their individuality and what makes us all unique!

There is no pressure to wear the latest fashion or to buy expensive costumes.  All children have to do to take part is wear odd socks to school, it couldn’t be simpler!

Hospitality and Hope

Hospitality and Hope is a shop at Horsley Hill Square for those that may need some financial support.

People have the chance to get £30 worth of food shopping once a week for just £4. No proof of benefits needed, it’s ran in good faith. If anyone wants to access this and need the help no questions asked, working people can get this too. Only proof to be shown is something with name and address to show they live within 2 miles of Horsely Hill.

The shop is called: Your Community Shop, 6-7 Horsley Hill Square, NE34 7HE

Mon, Wed, Fri 10am until 1pm  no vouchers needed just £4 cash each time.

Remembrance Sunday

Poppies will continue to be on sale in school this week priced 50p each.
