Take the kids for free

22nd July 2022Mr Bennett

Take the kids for free

With summer holidays nearly upon us we wanted to remind all parents of the offer below.  With cost of living rising every little helps.

Take the kids for free, all day, every day– Metro offer

Tyne and Wear Metro are excited to announce that their Take the Kids for Free offer has been extended permanently, making Metro travel even more affordable.

Up to three children aged 11 and under can travel anywhere on the Metro or Shields Ferry for free, if they are with a fare-paying adult.

We hope this offer will encourage families to explore new places and spend more quality time together.

For more information please visit: Take the kids for free | nexus.org.uk

Commonwealth Games Summer Passport Challenge

22nd July 2022Mr Bennett

Commonwealth Games Summer Passport Challenge

To spread the word of the Commonwealth Games and to assist the young people of South Tyneside to stay active throughout the summer holidays we have developed a  “take home” resource that students can engage with over the summer break.

Each individual can work through the challenge card to fill in as many stamps on their passport – to #conquerthecommonwealth alongside Perry, the mascot for Birmingham 2022.

All schools need to do is print off the attached document (Ideally double sided) and hand out to pupils as you see fit.

Parents / families can post on their respective social media feeds using #conquerthecommonwealth.

Summer Holidays safety message

22nd July 2022Mr Bennett

Play safe – stay Safe. Keep off the Metro tracks. That is the message that I would like your help to send out to your parents and children over the school holidays. This year my concerns are more acute, especially as although, I have been able to visit many schools this year, but I have by no means seen all of the children I would have seen during the pandemic.

The school holiday period is traditionally a time when Metro can see a rise in instances of trespass and Anti-Social Behaviour on the system, with restrictions lifted I would like to warn the children about the dangers of venturing on to the Metro tracks, and what may seem like harmless fun is in fact very serious and against the law.

While I am not suggesting that pupils attending your school are taking risks or behaving inappropriately, children often don’t see the dangers that surround the railway.  The lack of awareness of the dangers posed by the railway and the reality is a risk of being hit by 1,500 volts of electricity. The electricity on the railway is always on and always dangerous. Metro trains travel at speeds of up to 50mph and mainline trains much faster – and a train cannot swerve to miss someone in its path, so even if a driver can see your child, they cannot stop in time and they cannot change direction.

The railway is full of both obvious and hidden dangers.

It is vital we educate young people of the importance of railway safety – how to act responsibly while they are using public transport.  What may seem like harmless fun is in fact extremely dangerous and could result in life changing injuries or death.

If we could also remind pupils to be aware of the dangers in the Bus Interchanges as buses need to reverse in these areas – always use the designated pathway and not to play in these areas.

I have also enclosed a link for kids to travel free with a paying adult on buses across the north east.

Kind regards

Deborah

Dear parents/carers of pupils in KS2,
Across the year, Miss Beattie has hosted several KS2 French parties. Children were invited along as they had been working really hard in French lessons. Children had the opportunity to indulge in some French cuisine including: french fries, pain au chocolat, croissant, crepes, baguette, brie and lots of them even tried snails!!!
Everyone had an excellent time and Mademoiselle Beattie is already planning ahead for next year!

Teddy Bears Picnic – 20.7.22

This Wednesday sees the return of our annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic.

All children (Nursery – Yr6) will have the chance (weather dependent) to have a special break.

Children are welcome to bring a snack/crisps/drink to have during the picnic.

If you wish to support the work of Action Medical Research, you can make a donation via Parent Pay.

Oh…and don’t forget your teddy bear!

MP Visit

On Friday 15th , our year 6 pupils had a special visit from local MP Emma Lewell-Buck. She attended after receiving a letter from Henry in year 6. She was able to discuss her job and answer pupil questions during her visit with us.

It was fantastic that she could take time to support to Henry in person and meet the rest of his year group friends.

School Games Gold Level Mark Award

We are delighted to announce that we, Mortimer Primary school, have achieved the School Games Gold level Mark Award for the 2021/22 academic year.

The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in

2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward and recognise school’s engagement (provision and uptake) in the School Games against a national benchmark and to celebrate keeping young people active, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

Our physical activity and school sport achievements this year are too many to mention them all. A significant number of our children have participated in inter school sporting events and all of our children have taken part in competitive school events in school. A highlight was winning the South of Tyne Swimming Gala with our childfren taking home 36 medals in total.

Commonwealth Games

As you are probably aware, the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games takes place on the 28th July. The values of the Games are Humanity, Destiny and Equality.

The ethos of the games very much follow our own school approach for all aspects of your children’s education. The Games describes itself as the world’s most inclusive, fair and progressive multi-sport event.

Our school’s sports events allow access for all of our children to participate in competitive sport. Our school clubs also are aimed at children who are not necessarily gifted and talented within this area of the curriculum. Our intra school Sports Days and House Competitions (KS2) in Rounders, Football, Netball and Cricket are fully inclusive and allow all our children to participate and shine.

Healthy Schools

Mortimer Primary School has just been recognised again for this award. School’s need to apply every three years. As a school we have been involved with the Healthy Schools programme since its inception. This celebrates our success with looking after everyone’s health and well-being. Joseph and Jessica (two of our school council members) travelled to the Town Hall to collect this prestigious award.

Extended Opportunities for Pupils – Autumn Term

We are busy pulling together our extra-curricular activities package for September.

Start 2 Finish athletics will continue with KS1 Wednesday and KS2 on Friday. Sign-up forms will follow this week.

As soon as start dates are confirmed for other clubs, we will send out the appropriate information.

Year 6 Leavers assembly 20.7.22

Hankies at the ready parents! You are welcome to join us for a 9am start in the school hall Wednesday 20th July.

Stunt Bikes

KS2 pupils were very impressed with the 3SIXTY Bicycle Stunt Team as they performed a short array of tricks this morning and answered pupils’ questions! Check out a video or two on our website.

Weather Warning

We continue to review all activities to ensure the safety of all and will share any future updates asap. Non-uniform continues for Tuesday.

Mortimer Primary School
Excellence for all
Warnings of extreme heat – 15.7.22
Dear parents/carers,
Amber warnings of extreme heat have been given for Monday 18th July and Tuesday 19th July by the Met Office.

To aid the child in keeping as a cool as possible, we will be allowing non-uniform for both of these days.
We recommend t-shirt and shorts for pupils.
We ask that clothing choices are kept appropriate for school. Please no crop tops, football tops/strips or denim etc. Sensible footwear should still be wore, so please no flip flops or similar.
It will be very important to drink water throughout the day, therefore children should have a suitable water bottle in school to refill.
Many thanks for your support.
