Young Mathematician Award 2015

25th November 2015A Ogilvie

Congratulations to some of our Y6 children who have progressed to the second round of the Young Mathematicians’ Awards.

NRICH has worked with Explore Learning since 2010 to hold the Young Mathematicians’ Award.  Each year, teams of four primary children from schools across the UK take part in local events then five teams are chosen to come to NRICH headquarters in Cambridge for the final.

At each stage of the competition, teams work on an NRICH task and are judged on two things: how well they use their problem-solving skills to think like mathematicians and how well they work as a team.

The tasks are particularly challenging and are likely to seem quite different to the sorts of maths activities you might do at school in lessons.

Well done- we look forward to hearing of their success!

ASDA Visit Reception

By A Ogilvie12th November 2015

Reception had a brilliant morning when ASDA South Shields came to visit.

They have been learning all about different types of breads of the world and this morning they got the chance to try a wide variety courtesy of ASDA.

Encouraged to smell, feel and taste different bread types, some of which they had never had before, the children were in their element. Enthusiastically, they tasted and discussed picking out their favourites and giving reasons for their choices.

Thank you to the team from ASDA for visiting and helping bring our topic to life.

Learning from the master!

10th November 2015A Ogilvie

Year 6 pupils had their geography topic brought to life today when Freelance Expedition Leader Steve Berry came and talked to them about his many years climbing some of the largest mountains in the world and his experiences.

The children learnt about how to survive in many different extreme environments and how skilled a climber you must be to succeed in these treks.

The pupils were captivated listening to his stories and were all bursting with questions to ask. A once in a lifetime opportunity to talk to a real life adventurer. Steve, who is from South Shields, has climbed many of the great mountains and he has conquered Mount Everest. This year alone he has been on many trips around the world and he has led exhibitions to climb Kilimanjaro four times.

As Year 6 approach their outdoor education topic next week we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to invite Steve to talk to our children.

We wish him luck and best wishes for his next adventure as he leaves on Friday to climb Ama Dablam!
