Reception have been learning all about lots of people who help us in the community. As part of their topic, a local lifeguard came to talk to them about how to stay safe around water and who is there to help them if they are in trouble.
The children loved the afternoon and had lots of fun trying on the lifeguard uniform and sharing their swimming stories.
Well done to all our Y4 children, who have completed week one of the fitness challenge!
Many steps, many runs, many bounces on trampolines and much much more have taken place and Mortimer has maintained a high score on the leader board so far.
We have heard only good things about whole families taking extra walks, going for extra bike rides and swims and trying to be more active on an evening. The hard work is paying off!
Enjoy a well earned rest this weekend, save the steps for Monday when week two begins.
Here are a few pictures from this week.

Reception had a lovely afternoon yesterday celebrating the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth.
Jam sandwiches, crowns and juice were on the menu and fun was had by all in our outside theatre.
Lovely to see some of our Y6 children working practically and in small teams to problem solve this morning.
The excitement and enthusiasm in Y4 is contagious! All children in Y4 are taking part in a Fitness Challenge during this half term. This is a collaborative event ran across many schools in South Tyneside and is organised by Inspired spaces, Culture and Leisure and ICT in schools.
Each class are working as a team to complete fitness challenges. Every child has been given an ‘accelerometer’. This is a pedometer that measures their movement over the day. Measurements will only be taken Monday – Friday, the accelerometer should be worn every day from waking until going to bed, it will be taken home on an evening and brought back the next day. (Measurements will be not taken on a weekend.) The individual results will be recorded and then a class average will be submitted each day, this is the score that will be entered for the competition.
During the six weeks there will be many other challenges that the class will complete together for points. These are activities that explore many cross curricular topics including design technology, history, geography and science.
If you wish to learn more about this project please feel free to check out this website www.fitnesschallenge.today. This website will have information so you can help to support weekly challenges and also discuss with your child this project.
Y5KM had a fabulous day at Washington Old Hall yesterday, this visit compliments the children’s studies on Tudor times. It gives them the chance to be Lord and Lady of the manor for the day and see the various roles within the home.
We are always proud of how well our children work together across the year groups. As a large school, Mortimer Primary encourages our older children to help younger children when they can.
Here are some photos of our volunteer Y6 children using 15 minutes of their day to work with reception children to help improve their knowledge of letters, sounds and words.
Have a look at Receptions visit to Washington Wetland Centre. They looked at the different species, went pond dipping, minibeast hunting and had a fabulous day. (more…)
Before half term our Y4 children thoroughly enjoyed a visit from visiting actors to enhance their history topic about the vikings.
This visit brings to life the everyday life of a typical viking man and woman. Children listen to a talk, have an opportunity to ask questions and take part in activities with the actors. (more…)
