Y4 Tennis

5th July 2018A Stelling
After a very successful tennis competition at Westoe Tennis Club in South Shields,  a team of 8 Year 4 children then went on to represent South Tyneside in the county finals in Silksworth Tennis Centre.
The 8 children competed admirably and enthusiastically playing all of their individual games in a sportsman like manner. Although they did not make  it through to the final, many individual games had a close finish and a great time was had by all of the children who took part.
Above all, the 4 girls and 4 boys who represented Mortimer Primary were excellent ambassadors for the school and every credit should be given to them.

Y4 West Boldon Lodge

5th July 2018A Stelling
In conjunction with our science topic on habitats, Year 4 children paid a visit to West Boldon Lodge for a day of fun filled activities including: pond dipping, butterfly scavenging and mini beast hunting in three different environments.
The children had an amazing day in which they could use their new found knowledge to good use. Many children found species of creatures from all three areas that they had not seen before and learnt many valuable facts as a result.
With the weather being in our favour, a great day enjoying the out of doors was had by all and to complete the day, the staff from West Boldon Lodge commented on how well behaved and polite our children were. A great end to a super day!

Girls’ Cricket

5th July 2018A Stelling

After a successful competition at Whitburn Cricket Club, Mortimer Y5/6 Girls Cricket Team went on to represent the county at Darlington.

After facing tough opposition in their league, the year 5/6 girls emerged as overall winners which earned them a place in the semi-finals.

Again, despite nerves and excitement, the girls were victorious and found themselves in the final against Neville Cross from Durham.

Unfortunately, this time they were on the losing side but not until a magnanimous effort on behalf of the girls.

To be runners up in a county tournament in which over 100 teams initially took park, is an accolade in itself.

All of the girls have been a sheer delight to coach and fantastic to representatives of Mortimer Primary School. Mrs Keighery and I are incredibly proud of you.

Y5 Artist in Residence

4th July 2018A Stelling

Year 5 had the fabulous opportunity to work recently with local artist Zoe Emma Scott. Zoe showed the children examples of her work and discussed with them the techniques she used. The children then painted a landscape they liked that they chose. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Despite the cricket festival being cancelled, Westoe CC very kindly opened their doors so our Year 5 children could still enjoy a few hours of cricket. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and demonstrated their increased competencies in a match. A lovely day was had by all. Well done Year 5!

The final fixture of the Girls’ League took place in Mariner’s Park. Both our A and B team girls were victorious in their respective leagues. Mr Maltby was delighted with their performance.
KS2 Sports Day 28th June
The children had a fabulous morning of Sports Day fun. The sack race an old traditional favourite made a welcome return this year. We will have to wait a couple of weeks before the Sports Day trophy is presented to the winning house. The end of event races were extremely close. Congratulations to the winning athletes.
