Body Cameras for School Crossing Patrols

28th February 2023Mr Bennett

School crossing patrols across South Tyneside are being issued with body cameras to help improve road safety and crackdown on drivers who fail to stop.

Under the Transport Act 2000, school crossing patrols have the power to stop traffic when wearing their uniform and using the Stop sign.

South Tyneside Council Cllr Ernest Gibson and Mortimer Primary School headteacher Peter Bennett with school crossing patrol staff wearing new body cameras.

Any driver who fails to stop when signalled to do so by a school crossing patrol officer is breaking the law and can be reported to police. This can lead to a fine of up to £1000 and three points on their driving licence.

Crossing patrol staff serve nearby schools at 37 sites across the Borough. Staff will wear the cameras while on duty.

Councillor Ernest Gibson, Lead Member for Transport and Neighbourhoods at South Tyneside Council, said: “Road safety is a key priority for us and we are always looking at what more we can do to reduce the risk to all drivers, passengers, cyclists and pedestrians.

“The majority of drivers respect our school crossing patrol officers and the safety of the children and families they help cross the road on the extremely busy school run.

“However, there is a small minority who are impatient, can be abusive or simply ignore the signal to stop when approaching these areas.

“Vehicles that fail to stop when directed to do so put both our crossing patrol and pedestrians, including school children, at risk. The body cameras will help to record any incidents with the footage passed on to the police to determine whether an offence has been committed.

“Our school crossing patrol officers are loved by the local families they serve and work in all weathers to help keep people safe. We urge drivers to drive slowly and be mindful of their surroundings when approaching crossing patrol points.”

The cameras will also help the Council to monitor driver behaviour at school crossing points while pedestrians are being helped across the road.

The school crossing patrols staff serving the Mortimer Primary School communities are among the first staff members to be issued with body cameras.

Mortimer Primary School Head Teacher, Peter Bennett said: “The Crossing Patrol staff play a vital role in keeping our children safe by supporting the healthy choice of walking to school.

“We hope that the body cameras work to support the crossing patrol team, whilst increasing safety for our pupils and parents, as they make their way to and from school.”

The implementation of body cameras is just one of the ways the Council works to help make journeys safer across South Tyneside, particularly for young people. Officers in the Council’s road safety team deliver activities in schools, helping children to learn how to cross the  road safety, choose routes that ensure they stay as safe as possible and provide Bikeability courses which give school children the skills and confidence to cycle safely.

Mortimer Moments – 25.2.23
Dear parents/carers,
I am delighted to send you the 1st “Mortimer Moments”, which takes a look back at the first half term of the year.
So much happens in our school that it is good to reflect, share and celebrate. Let me know what you think when I am out and about, as I really appreciate your feedback. I hope this becomes a regular review for our school.
Monday sees the start of a 5 week half term before we hit Easter! On Wednesday, I am delighted to welcome the author Karen Langtree into school. She will be working with lots of our KS2 pupils throughout the day and leading an assembly. Having seen Karen in action before, I know children will enjoy her story about the Knights of the Wobbly Table. Karen was once a primary school teacher and has a passion for children’s literacy. She will be available after school for children to purchase signed books.
On Thursday, we have World Book Day 2023! We always look forward to seeing the costumes that the children come to school in.
For now, enjoy the rest of the weekend and we will see you Monday!

Book Swap

Book Swap – 8.2.23
Dear parents/carers,
Recent research by the National Literacy Trust shows that one in five children do not have a book to call their own. Given the current economic climate, this is unlikely to improve anytime soon. For this reason, we have decided that this year, rather than host a book fayre, we are going to organise a book swap.

It is our goal to ensure that every single child in our school goes home with a book.

We would be extremely grateful for any books that your child has outgrown or no longer enjoys. Book donations can be sent in with your child or dropped off at the school office.

We will be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 2nd March and the book swap will take place that week.

Thank you so much for your support in ensuring that no child gets left behind in their reading.

An update – 7.2.23
Dear parents/carers,

The half term has flown by and I am really enjoying being the Head Teacher of this fantastic school. There has been a lot going on and I have appreciated the increased communication I’ve had with parents. We continue to strive to bring excellence for all.

Please find below some messages and updates

Contact details

If you have recently changed: home address, email, phone number etc please can you complete the following online form so we can update our records.

Nuts in school

We have seen an increase in children bringing nut based products into school for snacks and lunch. Please can we ask that products containing nuts, such as Nutella, are left at home.

Grapes

Whilst many children enjoy a grape at lunch time, we are seeing whole grapes being sent into school. The hazard of choking on a whole grape is a risk, therefore we ask that grapes are cut up if being brought into school.

Child entertainment and employment

We have been asked to share these links with parents relating to Child Entertainment and Child Employment.  The local authority is aware that not all dance, drama and modelling groups apply for licences/permits and it is usually because they are unaware of the legislation.  They are hoping if they can get the information to parents you will ask the questions that are needed of these groups.

SID & Online Tools – 03.02.23
Dear parents/carers,

*Please find below an overview of our online learning tools which children may access at home.

Safer Internet Day 2023

‘Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online.’

On Tuesday 7th February we will be joining schools and youth organisations across the UK in celebrating Safer Internet Day 2023.

Safer Internet Day is a global campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology, which calls on children and young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers and more, to help to create a better internet.

Using the internet safely and positively is a key message that we promote at Mortimer Primary School, and celebrating Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity for us to re-emphasise the online safety messages we deliver throughout the year.

We would be delighted if you could join us in celebrating the day by continuing the conversation at home. To help you with this, the UK Safer Internet Centre have created some free activities and information for parents and carers which are available at: saferinternet.org.uk/SID-parents.

Whether you have 5 minutes to start a conversation or hours to spare, there are top tips, quizzes and films which you can use at home with your child.

If you have any concerns or questions about keeping your child safe online, please do get in touch with your child’s class teacher, Miss Marshall (Computing Lead) or Mrs Peacock, our Designated Safeguarding Lead.

Thank you for your support

Industrial Strike Action

Industrial Strike Action – 27.1.23
Dear parents/carers,
As highlighted to you earlier this week, the NEU has called for strike action. The first of these strikes is scheduled for Wednesday 1st February. The strikes are happening as a result of a national dispute between the union and the government over pay and funding and not due to issues at our school.
The NEU are only one of three large teaching based unions, therefore the impact on each school will vary. With some schools closed to others being unaffected and operating as normal. At Mortimer Primary School, we fully support our staff and their right to exercise their own decisions regarding strike action.
It is my duty to inform you that, given the information I have currently, Mortimer Primary School will be fully open to all children on 1/2/23.
At present, the school day will run as normal with teaching of the national curriculum in all classes. I will continue to evaluate the situation and will update you if anything changes.
With regard to the future strike days, we will be in touch with information regarding how our opening will be impacted nearer the time. These are scheduled for 28/2/23, 15/3/23 & 16/3/23.
Thank you for your support

Read Write Inc Visit

25th January 2023Mr Bennett

Read Write Inc Visit – 25.1.23
Dear parents/carers,

At the beginning of the academic year we embarked on a change to overhaul how we taught early reading and phonics. That change was Read Write Inc, a nationally recognised programme used by thousands of schools to teach early reading.

Earlier this week, we were visited by our consultant from Read Write Inc for a development day. She spent time visiting groups, observing our pupils and giving further coaching to staff.

The day was a real success and we are delighted at the feedback she gave, particularly about the quality of our teaching. She told us that ‘teaching is slick’ and she was very impressed by how well the programme is being implemented across Reception and KS1. She said that routines and expectations are well-embedded in every group and it was obvious that both the teaching staff and pupils were enjoying the lessons.

As ever, your children were a real credit to the school and the consultant commented on every child being engaged in each lesson she visited.

Implementing Read Write Inc. this successfully, is down to our reading team of teachers and teaching assistants. Their hard work has enabled the programme to make a successful start and set the foundation for all of our young readers.

My thanks also to Mrs Douglas, who has provided the leadership and coaching to ensure Read Write Inc is a success for all pupils. As a Head Teacher, I am passionate about children being able to read, therefore I will continue to support our staff to deliver for your children.

I look forward to seeing our progress moving forward and thank you for your support during this change.

If you have any questions about Read Write Inc, then we would be happy to chat with you.
