Week 14 – A letter from Mrs Cunningham (Monday)

22nd June 2020A Stelling

Hello everyone, it’s Mrs Cunningham here again,

Lately, you might have heard your parents saying things like, “You couldn’t make it up,” or ” You couldn’t write it, or, “There are no words….,”. What they all mean is that something that has happened is so astonishing to believe or so out of the ordinary, that you never thought it would happen. There has been so much on the news and in the papers about things that are going on in the world today which you would have never imagined.

On Saturday morning I thought I would have a walk in the park and along the beach to get some fresh air and some peace and quiet. So you can imagine my surprise when I got to Sunderland Harbour and saw lots of people looking at the sea and pointing. I joined in and saw two pods of dolphins diving in and out of the water! The sky was blue and the sun was glinting on the water. It was so wonderful to see and so unexpected. I then went into the park and saw a squirrel running for something on the grass that he had spotted which must have looked tasty. I stopped to watch and then from out of nowhere appeared a rat, raced in, took the food and disappeared. I don’t know who was most surprised, the squirrel or me!!

So my quiet, uneventful walk turned out to be quite exciting after all.

You couldn’t write it.

Have a most marvellous Monday,

Mrs Cunningham

Week 13 – A letter from Mrs Cunningham (Friday)

19th June 2020A Stelling

Hello everyone, it’s Mrs Cunningham here again.

Can you believe it is the first day of summer tomorrow? Where is the sunshine?

June 20th is known as the summer solstice, or the longest day of the year! That does not mean that there are more than 24 hours on Saturday. It means that there are more daylight hours than any other day of the year. The UK will enjoy 16 hours and 38 minutes of daylight. The sun will rise at 4.43 in the morning and set at 9.21 at night. I find it odd to think back to the winter when we come to school in the dark mornings and go home when it’s dark at tea time. I bet some of you have been woken up by the birds singing, or like me, you might be disturbed by the seagulls on your roof. The Mortimer yard seagulls are looking forward to you all returning. You know the ones that wait for the bell to go after play, then swoop down to the yard hoping to find any tiny bits of fruit or veg, or better still a raisin or two.

Let’s hope the sun shines on Saturday and you have the longest, sunniest day.

Have a fun filled Friday.

Mrs Cunningham

Barnados programme: SEE, HEAR , RESPOND

18th June 2020A Stelling

See, Hear, Respond, will provide targeted support to vulnerable children, young people and their families who are affected by coronavirus (COVID-19) and the measures put in place to stop its spread. It will be led by Barnardo’s, working in partnership with national children’s charities and local organisations. See, Hear, Respond will provide:

  • online support to children and families who are struggling;
  • street-based youth work to identify and support children at risk of harm outside of the home, including exploitation; and
  • support to help vulnerable children to successfully return to school or college if they have not been attending during the pandemic.

The service will focus on finding and reaching out to vulnerable children around the country who are having negative experiences on their health and wellbeing, as well as those at risk of harm. The project will aim to reach those children and families who are not in contact with children’s services, and the support provided to them will aim to prevent their needs escalating. The project will prioritise those most at risk of harm either inside or outside the home, including very young children and adolescents. There is more information about this on the Barnardos website.

For children in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6.
For those parents who requested a place in our Phase Two return (week beginning 22nd June), you will receive a text message with the days your child has been allocated.
Due to the number of requests all year groups will operate 2 groups coming in for 2 days.
Group 1 will attend Monday 22/6/20 & Tuesday 23/6/20
Group 2 will attend Wednesday 24/6/20 & Thursday 25/6/20
We will attempt to keep days as similar as possible moving forward into future weeks, but this does depend on the number of requests we get.
Nursery am & pm children will come in just for their session.
Groups are now set for the week. Please do not send your child into school if they have not been allocated a place.
If you do not receive a text but think you requested a place, please contact the school and we can check our lists.
Please read the Phase Two plan (as pictures on this post) fully if you have not yet done so. It answers most frequently asked questions and contains the staggered start and finish times of the school day.
