On the 16th January Year 5 as part of the Hoops for Health programme run by Newcastle Eagles entered a very exciting competition at Temple Park. Mortimer entered three teams and although we did not make it through to the finals, all of our children thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Following on from the heats held in October, seven teams competed in a tournament that featured an extremely high standard of play. Mortimer were the only team in South Tyneside who managed to get two teams through to the finals. Both teams played very well. Mortimer A were undefeated and emerged South Tyneside champions. As well as this the coaches commented on the exceptionally high standard of behaviour our teams demonstrated.
We will be accepting our delivery of trees shortly after half term and a date will be set for planting them. The children involved in this project will be donning their wellies and along with a parent/carer will aim to transform an area of the turning circle into our Mortimer Woodland! Mrs Mackay has also managed to secure another delivery of sapings in November taking our total up to 45 trees. We look forward to seeing our ‘woodland’ grow.
Quite a few children in our various sessions have been asking about our holiday clubs, and with the stormy weather continuing, we know families will be looking for activities to engage their children, especially those with INDOOR space.
Our Camps are held at Ridgeway primary academy every Half term, as well as Easter and Summer hols. We have both indoor and outdoor space. Covering a range of sports activities, games and skill development.
These camps are a great opportunity for our youngsters to develop their sports skills, team work and build confidence in making new friends in different environments. It’s also a LOT OF FUN!
Hope to see you there!

Miss Bays’ class thoroughly enjoyed their multisports workshop at Temple Park Centre. They had the opportunity to try out different stations which focused on a range of physical skills.
Mortimer A and B teams competed in the High 5 School Games, with both of them winning their groups. They then played the runner ups from the other groups.Mortimer A won their play offs game, securing their place in the South Tyneside Finals on 27th February. The B team were narrowly beaten by Westoe Crown’s A team so just missed out on a place in the finals. As always, the children’s behaviour was exemplary and they displayed brilliant sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

Year 4 have got some Viking visitors in school next week. Click here for more information.
Year 5 had a fantastic day at Sunderland University. They were given a full campus tour and designed their ‘dream university’. They learnt about friction to build rockets. These were then tested for speed. They participated in an interactive presentation called ‘Degree or no Degree’, finding out which careers need a degree and which don’t. They also had the opportunity to explore their own career aspirations.
